In 1986 Mattel had a deal with Cannon Group to make a Masters of the Universe live adaptation on screen. For toys makers the goal is to make its flagship while the independent studio attempted to escape bankruptcy. Dolph Lundgren, revealed by Sylvester Stallone in Rocky 4had to come quickly Thanks to his impressive muscular features, he plays He-Man (Musclor in France) whereas Frank Langella becomes the demonic Skeletor The two best enemies are both asked to turn Eternia and planet Earth into a battlefield and steal the show in the box-office. Unfortunately, in 1987 when the film was released in theaters that 20 million Heroic Fantasy story fails to meet expectations. However, it remains a famous movie for a whole generation and for all the 80 kids. The icing on the cake is that Masters of the Universe let Courtney Cox shine bright (Friends, Scream) by giving her very first role. Barbarians, from Conan to He-Man, a story of the Conansploitation by Claude Gaillard

Heroic Fantasy shone in the Nineties as a consequence of the critical acclaim received by Conan. From John Milus in the box office, a group of barbarians took over theaters and videoclubs stalls.
Their names were Ator, Yor, Gunan, Thor, Hundra, Dar … and all of those illigetimate offsprings participated in the making of a very special and unique character, a fierceful and heroic character, quite old but also delightedly anachronic: The Barbarian.

In the USA, the legend producer, Roger Corman often nicknamed “The B TV series pope” dived deeper and took advantage of the situation to delocalize the production of his “low quality Conan” in South America. In Italy, answering with great lines had become a special skill to give an answer to the great Hollywood successes. Not to mention that ideas emerged also from the character of Conan. Joe d’Amato, Lucio Fulci, Ruggero Deodato or also Tonino Ricci dug deeper into the genre whereas Luigi Cozzi took advantage of the era and remade the 12 labours of Hercules with the character of Hulk. That short cinematographic genre and poorly documented is often named as Conansploitation. The book Barbarians: From Conan to He-Man comes back on that peculiar phenomenon and that 256 page big format and fully illustrated gave an intense journey to live through the pages.
